Artur Żmijewski

The controversial work of Artur Żmijewski (*1966 in Warsaw, lives in Warsaw) – which consists of film, video, and photography – first attracted international attention with the photo and video series An Eye for an Eye (1998). Here, the artist presents men with amputated limbs together with “healthy” men who lend their arms and legs to the disabled. The work is typical of Żmijewski’s examination of social issues, as well as his reception of historical events and recent political developments. His recurring subjects include the establishment of radical right-wing forces in Poland and the suppression of Nazi history in European discourse.
